How do I register as an employer?
If you’re starting a new business, you’ll be prompted to register as an employer when you apply for your ABN. Alternatively, if you already have an ABN, you can register as an employer simply by phoning the Tax Office on 13 28 66 (you’ll need to have either your ABN or TFN close to hand). With registration complete, there are a couple of other things you still need to consider: Working hours and rates Before agreeing on hourly rates or working hours with your employees, you need to look into what industrial awards apply to your workplace and get hold of a copy of the relevant award(s). Workers compensation No matter how small your business, you need to have a current workers compensation policy. See Do I need any special insurance policies? to find out more. Superannuation Most employees are usually members of at least one superannuation fund. However, if an employee doesn’t already belong to a super fund, or they fail to choose a fund of their own, you need to subscribe to an employer fund of your own choice.
